This is a hands on workshop offering the essentials of the Certified Product Owner course with certification from the Scrum Alliance, plus a toolkit full of product discovery, design and development skills to help kickstart your next product idea.

You can apply these concepts immediately following the workshop to deliver results to your customers and end users.

As an attendee you will:

  • Understand how to create a compelling vision and communicate this effectively to teammates, stakeholders, and clients.
  • Learn how to elevate team dynamics and break down the silos and stagnation between design and development, regardless of your organizational structure.
  • Participate in gamified Lean and Agile product development exercises to reduce waste and prevent sprints from turning into a constant pressure cooker.
  • Create a culture of ongoing customer discovery together with your teams in order to build great products that delight your customers.
  • Leverage the tools learned to optimize value creation and customer satisfaction. You'll be able to create a realistic release plan, stock the product backlog with valuable user stories and refined requirements. You will also know how you can increase effectiveness (i.e. productivity by focusing on Pareto-optimal stories), level the workload, and steer your product development proactively.

"This goes well beyond just another PMP or Scrum course"

Previous attendees have included everyone from 10-year Product veterans to those working with a development team for the first time, and even HR professionals supporting Agile practices. Ideally you are currently working with a product development team, or want to, and are familiar with the basics of Lean and Agile product development. If you are just getting started in this area, you will be provided a bit of pre-work to help you catch up with a number of the concepts being explored during the workshop.

Here is what you will experience:

Day 1: Laying the foundation

We begin with data gathering from the group, taking the pulse of the needs of the attendees. Heat maps, leadership surveys and effective user interview techniques are used to pinpoint the pain points of Product Ownership felt by the group to create a safe space for exploration.

Design Thinking techniques are then used to ideate and prototype, validate, and test your assumptions. We’ll have our first go at pitching a vision quite early here on Day one!

Just before lunch, we’ll have a Scrum Chalk Talk to cover the basics of Scrum.

We'll take a solid hour for lunch, and also several breaks to avoid zoom fatigue!

After lunch, we’ll have a retrospective to see how we’re doing. We’ll use this as input into the remainder of the events for today.

Then we’ll be shifting focus to learn about Change Agent tools to help with eradicating organizational blockers enabling Agile product development. Anything that is our current impediment to delivering in a lean and Agile fashion is fair game for us to tackle here. We’ll be learning about Scrum in this exercise, actively learning by doing to experience roles, artifacts, team dynamics, and the flow of product development in a 59 minute micro-scrum exercise.

We’ll close the day with group exercise on using the Agile Manifesto as a diagnostic tool for product development soundly based in values that respect people.

Day 2: Building the house

We’ll begin the day with a quick table-top exercise showing how reducing waste in the system (from concept to cash) can bring extreme value to your organization. This is essential to eradicate silo’d behavior and a wonderful teaching tool that the attendees can take and quickly benefit from back in the real world.

We’ll focus next on the role and value of the Product Owner with interactive exercises to challenging the comfort zone for what is needed for igniting Organizational change in 21th century.

Just before lunch we’ll cover Radical Management.

After lunch, we’ll have the opportunity to do full product development, from Product Discovery and Visioning through to delivery. We will be “learning by doing” covering the following topics:

  • Practical Product Discovery tools and Visioning.
  • User Story Mapping with just-right User Stories.
  • Effectively plan your Releases
  • Explore Value-Driven Development in your Sprints
  • Experience the power of the Agile Manifesto, making sense of values and principles in a retrospective.
